Why the NHS doesn't fund it.
Hair loss without an underlying medical cause is treated as a cosmetic concern, and the NHS focuses its resources on conditions that threaten health. That's a funding judgement, not a verdict on whether hair loss matters — anyone who's experienced it knows it matters.
What the NHS does do.
Your GP is absolutely the right first stop when hair loss is sudden, patchy, or comes with other symptoms — because ruling out medical causes (thyroid, iron, skin conditions, medication effects) comes before any cosmetic conversation. That check is free, and we'll point you there ourselves when your picture suggests it.
What going private means.

- Regulation still applies: registered professionals, inspected premises, advertising rules — check all three wherever you go
- Consultation-first remains the marker of a trustworthy provider, NHS or not
